It is time to make the Piedmont safe and convenient for pedestrians. Walking can replace driving for short errands and trips to school, resulting in healthier people and a healthier environment. The following Winston-Salem Neighborhood Alliance resolution expresses this view. And whereas the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined that Americans are becoming less fit -- partly due to a lack of exercise And whereas walking can replace driving for short errands and trips to school, resulting in healthier people and a healthier environment And whereas we care about children, seniors, and others who must walk, those who should walk and those who just like to walk. And we care about their health and fitness and their safe access to schools, stores, libraries and other services However many neighborhoods in Winston-Salem are not pedestrian-friendly. Therefore, be it resolved that people be encouraged to select walking over driving whenever appropriate. And that the City of Winston-Salem be urged to take all necessary and practical steps to make walking convenient and safe. [WSNA]
